the pics of the 17" make me feel so inadequate with my 12", but its great for traveling. You can bet though, when i go to grad school in a few years i'm going to let my g/f have this 12" and i'm going to buy the 17". I love mine, don't get me wrong, and its great for travel too and from school, but i'd like a desktop replacement, and with a bigger external HD and loads of Ram i think that the 17" would be ideal for me. Anyone feel the same?

hi i have an ipod touch 4 JB on 4.1 i was just wondering that is there a way to put songs in to the ipod without connecting to itunes
and also any app for bluetooth transfer
Well, MewSeek is like limewire and, if you get the paid version, you can add songs to the ipod/music app. And Wifi sync lets you do just that, sync over wifi (but sadly not bluetooth)

I've learned over time that zooming is really something you shouldn't do often. So many people think they can make amazing videos by zooming in and out all the time when really the zooming just hurts them.
It can be dramatic if done right, and sparingly, but it should not be overused. And always disable the "digital" zoom option on any camera. It's optical zoom, or nohing.
I'd recommend not using copyrighted music without the proper permissions.
Certainly for anything shared publicly (although YouTube seems to be changing the rules by allowing you to use certain tracks as long as they get to link to the artist credits and a "buy track" page on iTunes/Amazon). I'd say it should be OK for personal use and for learning how to edit against music.

I wonder when macminipaperweight will come out :D
That's my best design so far :o I saw this guy on techtv who happened to take 8 plasma displays (his work gave them to him for free) and a mac mini to make virtual windows in his house. Pretty awesome concept. Having guests around, hearing them say "woh... your neighbourhood is beautiful", when really you live in apartment up against a brick wall :p
It would be neat to mod that somehow with Sims 2. Make it feel like you're "in the game." Then again, your guests may start to think that you "have no life." ;)

Have any of you tried upgrading (for whatever reason, maybe coming from a 3GS) and been questioned about the unlimited plan? It's still some 14 months away for me but I was just curious what might transpire when I try upgrading and they see I got unlimited data even though I joined AT&T AFTER June.

I hear a lot of confusion about this. I don't know why TechCrunch said what they did, but by all accounts, there is no golden master right now. This is just a developer preview. After this there will (probably) be betas. And after that there will eventually be a golden master or two.
Apple uses the term "golden master" uniquely, but it's basically what most software companies would call a "release candidate". The goal is to make only one RC. You release a RC build when you legitimately believe that the product is complete and this is the build you plan on releasing to the public. It's the last phase in testing. You let your testers try it out and see if there are any show-stopping flaws, if not, the "release candidate" becomes the "release".
When the GM is ready, it will be released to developers and labeled as such, and the public release will follow very shortly after. I don't know why TechCrunch is claiming this is an "internal GM", maybe they know something I don't, but as it stands it seems they are just causing confusion.

Isn't the iPhone 4 a 720i video?
I think it's actually 720p
Pretty much the only thing I can recommend (with knowledge) is the camera I own which is a Canon HF S200. I just checked Amazon.com and it list for $649.00. It shoots in full 1920x1080p resolution. It does record in AVCHD and you will have to transcode this if you want to edit it but it's pretty easy to do. The picture quality is awesome!! In low-light, the picture isnt the best but I always keep in mind that I didnt buy a pro camera. The thing that kills me the most is that people complain that consumer cameras "dont do this" and "dont do that" but what are you really expecting?!? Dont you think if consumer cameras could produce the picture that pro cameras can the big budget movies, tv broadcast, and any other professional quality video would be shot on them? Sorry, I had to get that out. . . back to the topic. IMO, this is a GREAT camera at at a decent price. There are accessories that you may need: SDHC memory cards, mic, and I highly recommend getting the wide angle lens (WD-H58) built for this camera but as always its your choice. If you want to see what this camera can produce, do a search on YouTube for "HiiDefinition" and look at the video that says "Film Look 24p". This guy really shows the potential this camera has. I'm not saying your video is going to look as good as his, that's dependent on your own creativity and imagination. Ummm, that pretty much sums up my recommendation. Good luck

I've never been so baffled by a Mac behavior. Wondering if someone can help.
Just purchased two weeks ago a "new" refurb iBook from Apple's site, a 14" 1.3Ghz with a gig of new RAM.
The problem: I can't get it to connect wirelessly with our well-established wireless broadband home office. Some helpful details:
*** This iBook connects just fine when plugged into an Ethernet cable.
*** This iBook has connected wirelessly, but only for about a minute or two at a time, and then I get the following error message:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v416/sequoia1234/UpdateError.png
*** We have Comcast cable at our home office, and use a Linksys wireless G WRT54G.
*** We have 2 other iBooks and 1 PowerBook, all connect wirelessly just fine. They're each using DHCP, but I can also assign a fixed IP address, and they work fine with those as well. (I also have a G5 2G, but that's Ethernetted in). All of my Macs have in excess of 1 gig of original RAM, and are all running the most current software updates and 10.4.3.
*** I've used Macs extensively since 1991, and know a fair bit about them.
*** This iBook has had Onyx run a few times on it (in attempts to fix the problem). I've repaired permissions over a dozen times. I've also trashed the following .plist files:
com.apple.internetconfig.plist
com.apple.internetconfigpriv.plist
com.apple.internetconnect.plist
com.apple.internetpref.plist
com.apple.recentitems.plist
*** In this iBook's Network settings, I've tried using DHCP, and the numbers come up identical (with a diff IP address of course) to the other Macs that are connecting wirelessly just fine.
*** The airport card strength (in the right side menu) shows full bars all throughout our home office and house. It's fully lit up.
*** Running Network diagnostics often says "It looks like you are connected to the Internet" but I'm not.
*** I've tried shutting down all the other Macs, to see if they're somehow part of the problem.
*** I've tried setting the IP address manually (over 30 times, with a variety of IP numbers).
*** I opened the keyboard and removed and reseated the Airport Extreme card. Same with the RAM: removed and reseated it. I've restarted the Mac, the router, the modem, honest-to-god even my entire house electrical circuits 'till the cows come home.
*** When I take the iBook to other locations (local cyber cafes, even the Denver Apple store) it lights up like a Christmas tree, and I'm able to wirelessly get on in a heartbeat.
*** When friends stop by (on both Mac and Windows laptops, THEIR computers hook up wirelessly immediately.
As I said, I've never been so baffled. I think: if it was hardware, it wouldn't work at the other locations. If it was the router, or its settings, the other 4 Macs wouldn't connect.
Any ideas?
I will never be so grateful for a fix!!

I just received my quote from the "Business Manager" at the local Apple store. I have to purchase through my wife's company so the quote is just for the 12" iBook without any upgrades.
However, I would like to upgrade to the 60gb drive. When I bring them the company check do you think I can just add the upgrade then and pay the difference myself. I think it's only $50 for the upgrade.
Also, if I am able to upgrade, do I have to wait long for the upgrade?
Thanks for your help. I am getting ready to purchase my first iBook and I'm not very familiar with dealing with Apple.

It is very easy to jb 4.2.1 now. The improvements to the OS certainly make it worthwhile as does the ability to run all the latest apps. Virtual memory hack is no longer required.
Is it?, is there a really easy to use tool for a proper (untethered) jailbreak?. I've not looked upgrading from 3.2 as I'm not interested in any of the new features, but I keep seeing games I can't buy because I don't have a new ios.

i found this thread while looking for the solution to a similar situation. I too am looking for a phone with a QWERTY keyboard that does not require a data plan, but I also need a calendar that can sync with my mac computer. I don't care what calendar it is (google/ical/other) and and am willing to buy/download third party software, but am not sure about Bit Pim since fourm users' reviews seem mixed at best. I would like to stay with Verizon (cdma) if possible, but haven't found a phone on their network to fit my needs, so now I am open to any carrier. Any advice appreciated.

I got the Dr. Bott mini DisplayPort Extension Pro cable (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H2477ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MTg5OTIwMTE&s=topSellers) (2meter). Note, that link is to the Apple site but I didn't buy it there since almost anywhere else is cheaper.
There are others on the market too and other lengths (e.g., Dr. Bott has a 1m cable). The only two "problems" associated with mDP extension cables are (a) they may be hard to find in stock -- Dr. Bott was a problem at the time I went looking for them and (b) if you want to be able to pass audio through the mDP you need to make sure the cable supports that. For example you can find mDP extension cables in a lot of places but not all also support the audio (for example, monoprice (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10246&cs_id=1024602&p_id=5502&seq=1&format=2)).

So then it wouldn't matter if they could or not?
Well, do they hurry home and try to do it? Or just forget about making an extra trip home since it can't be done anyway?

I've had a similar experience on several occasions, most recently today. I have my inbox sorted by date received, with newest mail at the top, but for some reason new mail (received 'Today') will be at the bottom. Mail received 'Yesterday' will be at the top.
My message counter (in the dock icon) will indicate new mail, but when I look for it (at the top of my date-sorted list), it won't be there. I have to scroll down to the bottom of the list, and there, below the oldest of my already-read e-mails, is my new mail.

Just saying, this advice is incorrect. The first version was simply capturing the return value from the function. The second is discarding the return value. Both are calling the function.
Sorry to disagree... the script didn't work until the mail function was called directly.. maybe you should try running the code first---
