The only thing i would worry about is if Nintendo pulls a M$ and when/if they release online games that they won't let you online because you modified your hardware.

So H.264 is a very compressed format. That sets off a flag right there. Ideally you wouldn't be provided footage in such a lossy format.

Taking the H.264 footage and converting it to DV NTSC is essentially compressing it again (albeit a lesser compression), but it is still increasing the generation count. Instead, I would try throwing it into compressor and transcoding to apple prores 422. That should hopefully alleviate any loss of quality.

But sadly we don't live in an ideal world :) And this is footage given out for television usage, believe it or not...(do CBS Sunday Morning and the Today Show really like getting footage in compressed h.264?)

I'll try prores 422. My thought was that as the the other footage is DVPro NTSC converting it to DV NTSC would be transcoding to a closely matching format. But it didn't seem to help any...

My friend is going up to SF this afternoon and then going to Macworld tomorrow. He asked if I want to come and I would love to.

But I remember last year, people talking about how all the stands are closed on friday and there is no point in going.

I do not know what I would actually do there besides look at the macbook air but it would be a fun experience considering that all my finals are over today.

It is just a few hours drive but would it be worth it?

I presume since this uses the undocumented (apart from the header files) IOConnectCallMethod it would not be OK to include in an app for the Mac App Store?

You'll probably have to try it to find out for sure.

However, a google search for IOConnectCallMethod found this:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/darwin-drivers/2008/mar/msg00007.html

It suggests IOConnectCall* functions are newer replacements for older deprecated functions. So using the older functions WOULD get you rejected, but the newer ones, I dunno: try it and see what happens.

Basically, it doesn't sound too good. It might sound better with high impedance cans. I have some akg k77 and the output on my macbook sound pretty bad compared to my external soundcard.

I don't think you'll get trouble with getting enough volume out of it with high impedance headphones as the output can go ridiculously high so I don't think that would be a problem even with high impedance cans.

Ah, the rumors are causing a feeding frenzy again - I'm still waiting till October when IBM makes it statement concerning their Power4. There are just too many questions and no answers. The only thing that everyone agrees on is that the G4 needs to be replaced or drastically updated.

In NZ you can buy them from http://www.photo.co.nz/newprods/newcrumpler.htm and they seem to be wierdly a lot cheaper than the aussie crumpler website prices, but I'm not complaining :) I think they do international shipping and take the gst (tax) off the price, so I guess it would depend on how much shipping costs to see if it was worth getting sent to where ever you live. I have a crumpler sheep scarer for my 12" powerbook and its great. Carrys my lunch, powerbook, wallet, some thin notebooks and a jersey. My b'friend has been looking at either a very busy man or a wack-o-phone for his 15" powerbook. From looking at them I would prefer to have a wack-o-phone for a 12" cos the very busy man seems quite large, but it depends how large your binder and books are. The wack-o-phone seems to have comparable space to my sheep scarer. There are lots of reviews online if you search on google and I remember reading another good review on these forums. Only problem I have with mine is that it zips at the back so its a real pain if you want to get your wallet or anything out quickly as you have to take the whole thing off to get anything out. Might get a Weetons to fix this problem.

Dude, it's apple. you need to b*tch like anything to them to get it fixed. Ask to be transferred to second tier, yell down the phone, whatever it takes... You just have to be really $#!++y with them and then they'll co-operate. that's the only way i could get my base station replaced. trust me, i tried the nice approach, doesn't work, you've just got to be pissed off enough to make them want to fix the problem so they don't have to hear about it any more.

Looks like there are many MacBooks as well as MacBoko Pro's on sale in the Apple Refurb shop. I'm not saying its proof we're getting new laptops today, but if you're looking to save a bundle and don't mind "previous gen" hardware it looks like a pretty good deal. :)

However, as the Store (well the UK one at least) is now down...

    We'll have to wait!

TBH,the name reminds me of the "B-Sharps" from the Simpsons "a name that's witty at first, but that seems less funny each time you hear it". Also it doesn't roll off the tongue. I'd keep trying... good luck.

I have a 250gb Porche design and it's nice. I hasn't failed. It hums a little, and it spools down when I unmount the drive from the OS. I really don't get what all the design kudos are for it. It has a shiny front, and is pretty much a rectangle. I like SilverKeeper, the backup software that comes with it. Careful with what you choose to exclude during the backup.

I'm a little confused, I understand the OSX and bootcamp win7 on the SSD but why are you partitioning the 750GB HDD? You might want to format the 750GB as mac osx journaled and get macdrive for win7, that way windows can write to both the bootable osx and the 750GB drive.

I have one drive with 3 partitions. SL, Lion and win7 and can share files between each OS. Just a suggestion... :)

I understand that part of the equation, but I was wondering if windows would give me the option to install programs (like office and photoshop) to the second hard drive. For example, would the installer be able to tell that it is a hard drive that windows can use to install programs?

    Permissions should be 744 I guess (all-read-read), maybe 755.

.htaccess files are inherited. Put one in your root directory, and all directories will be 'protected'. :)
You may of course over-write the inherited .htaccess parameters for a given directory with a new .htaccess file. In turn, this new file will cascade down to all sub-directories.

Or you can edit the httpd.conf file. For the DocumentRoot, you will see a <Directory> directive. Simply put -Indexes in the Options tag. Be sure to check throughout the file. The Apache default is to make the DocumentRoot very strict, then loosen the perms later on.

I personally prefer this method over .htaccess files, just for the cleanliness of the web directories. Also, it eliminates any file permission security holes that may pop up.

EDIT: If you choose .htaccess files, do _not_ use 744 or 755. You want these to be 644, maximum.
